Filegroup Restore and error "The online restore to database 'DB' failed."

Hi all,

SQL Server 2012 EE

Win Server 2008 R2

I am doing some tests regarding backup and recovery. Here is what i have done so far:

 - I have created a small database

 - populated it,

 - generated a full backup,

 - Truncate a table

 - Restore (here is where i am getting into issues)

Here are the detailed steps

-- backup full

BACKUP DATABASE TESTE1 TO DISK='K:\Instances\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Backup\bkp_full_manual_teste1_25082014.bak';

-- backup transaction log

BACKUP LOG TESTE1 TO DISK='K:\Instances\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Backup\bkp_tlog_manual_teste1_25082014.bak';

-- truncate

truncate table TESTE.TAB_TESTES_03

-- restore full

USE MASTER;
RESTORE DATABASE TESTE1 FILEGROUP='FG02'
FROM DISK='K:\Instances\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Backup\bkp_full_manual_teste1_25082014.bak'
WITH STATS=20, REPLACE, NORECOVERY;

-- restore transaction log

RESTORE LOG TESTE1 FROM DISK='K:\Instances\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Backup\bkp_tlog_manual_teste1_25082014.bak'
WITH RECOVERY;

... in the "restore full" step i get the following error:

Msg 3101, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use.
Msg 4348, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The online restore to database 'TESTE1' failed. It may be appropriate to perform an offline restore instead. An offline restore is initiated by using BACKUP LOG WITH NORECOVERY.
Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

What i've read so far is that in the EE edition, i can restore a filegroup online. as you can see, i am using the EE version:

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.2100.60 (X64)
    Feb 10 2012 19:39:15
    Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation
Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) (Hypervisor)

What am i doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Experts,

I Want to run backup every first Monday of the month and only keep 2 copies, which means after third month successful backup first month should be deleted.

I know how to schedule the backup for first monday of every month.
My only query is how do we set retention period and how do we define fine name.

Thanks & Regards,

Using SQL Server 2008R2, I am trying to restore a .bak-file from a network folder (on a NAS)

I keep getting the following error:

Msg 3634, Level 16, State 1, Line 2

The operating system returned the error '1317(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105)' while attempting 'CreateFileW' on '\\<IP HIDDEN>\rppt\backup\myDB.ndf'.

Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2

RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

According to my Google searches, error Message 1317 means 'There is no such user'

I have set the SQL Server service account to a domain user. The user has also full privileges to the network folder I am trying to access

Waits Statistics - PREEMPTIVE, HADR and THREADPOOL

Hi everyone,

first of all I'll briefly describe the enviroment:

no. 2 Windows 2008 R2 Servers (virtual) w/ 16vCpu and 64GB ram each

no. 5 SQL Server 2012 instances on each virtual server (w/ max memory and cpu affinity settings)

no. 5 Availability Group

This SQL Subsystem is used by no. 5 Sharepoint 2013 farms

Since almost one year we're experiencing some issues related to Availability Groups.

For example, during 24h we have more than once connection termination of all databases in AG, and immediate reconnection (eg. there's no failover)

AlwaysOn Availability Groups connection with secondary database terminated for primary database 'WordAutomationServices_e666ce2ffff24e6592f081cd755d3e9e' on the availability replica with Replica ID: {48f50542-dcad-493a-a2bb-f2b2a4d6ed73}. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

[...]

While receiving such email alert

The recovery LSN (403:52:1) was identified for the database with ID 8. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

Moreover, at least once per day we receive this alert email about Thread pool exaustion:

The thread pool for AlwaysOn Availability Groups was unable to start a new worker thread because there are not enough available worker threads. This may degrade AlwaysOn Availability Groups performance. Use the "max worker threads" configuration option to increase number of allowable threads.

Those events happens on every instance, obviously in different moments; btw Production instances are more affected than others (because of n. of databases in AG.

Recently this issues seems to have an impact on performances too.

Trying to drill down the bottleneck with waits stats analysis, I found that the culprit seems to be PREEMPTIVE, HADR and THREADPOOL waits:

It also seems not to show any evidence of I/O, memory or cpu pressure.

Any clue to pinpoint those issue and trying to isolate the problems?

3rd party encryption strategies.

For very long winded reasons I dont want to use either TDE or the column level encryption native to SQL Server. Does anyone have actual experience they can share on 3rd party tools, either good or bad? NOT looking to do column level.

Thanks!

SQL Server 2012 PREEMPTIVE_OS_CRYPTOPS Wait

$

I understand the basic premise behind the PREEMPTIVE_OS_* wait types (e.g. SQL Server is interacting with Windows and the wait is at that level) but I cannot find anything explaining the majority of them and nothing at all for PREEMPTIVE_OS_CRYPTOPS. For that matter, I cannot find much of anything of any of the PREEMPTIVE_X_X waits as a whole which is more than a little frustrating.

This particular wait is related to very significant performance problems we are having but all of my standard metrics (PLE, disk latency, etc) are consistent with their baseline values. I've looked through our monitoring system and before late last week, we had not seen this wait before. So far today, it is our top server wait, taking over 4 hours of time and dragging our server to a slow crawl. The objects affected seem to be procedures that implement Scalar and Table functions

Any advice will be truly appreciated.

SQL add/update cursor error

I'm using MSSQL 2005 as a backend and VB6 as a front end. I am able to add and update using the back end but when trying to enter data in the frontend application I receive this error: "The cursor does not include the table being modified or the table is not updatable through the cursor."

incorrect cpu_count reported after installing SQL2012 SP2 (x64)

$

installed SQLExpress 2012 with advanced services on my new Win 8.1 laptop. Since windows update is allowed to update all microsoft products, SP2 was installed also. After the update, i noticed 2 strange things:

  1. SQL Agents appears in the configuration manager (not able to start)
  2. Reporting about number of logical and physical CPU is changed (screwed up).

The laptop has an 'AMD A6-6310 APU with AMD Radeon R4 Graphics' which was identified as 1 physical en 4 logical CPUs. Now it's 4 Physical and 1 logical CPUs. Adding CU1 doesn't fix the problem either. MSinfo32 is reporting the correct values:

here's the output of sys.dm_os_sys_info (with version info):

On the properties screen in SSMS it says 4 processors.

I am sure it did report the correct logical/physical cpu, because I collected this data.

So why is dm_os_sys_info reporting wrong values?

Adobe Illustrator thumbnail view in a Picture Library?

$

We are using Adobe Illustrator and we need to see the thumbnails in a picture library.  All of the other images work, but not the AI files.

We got the 16x16 icons added for AI for the details view, but we haven't been able to figure out where the thumbnail's are generated from.  Searching the internet hasn't worked yet, (must not have the right combination of search words), so I'm hoping that someone here can offer some suggestions.

If anyone knows how to do this I would greatly appreciate hearing it.

Thanks.

Tran log backup fail after setting a DB offline

$

This is strange.  SQL 2005 SP3 (build 4340).  Full backup job and tran log backup job are separate maint plans/Agent jobs as opposed to multiple steps in one maint plan (don't ask me... I didn't set it up that way.)

I set a database XYZ offline last night at around 9pm.  It was last backed up at 8pm (full recovery mode).  My tran log backup started failing then.  This morning, I detached the database.  Tran log backup job still failing.  I finally realized it had something to do with database XYZ so I re-attached it.  Tran log backup working now.  The weird thing is that XYZ had not been selected only specific databases, and the detached database isn't selected.  I tried setting to simple recovery mode and doing a final full backup before detaching, but tran log job still fails.  How can I get rid of database XYZ without the tran job failing?  Thanks.

When running a particular stored procedure inside crystal report, the error " Could not continue scan with nolock due to data movement" comes once every few weeks. After I clear the query cache plan, it works again for few weeks and the problem comes again. During these few weeks, there is no restart or query plan clearing.

If I run the stored procedure inside SSMS, where the SQL statement is copied and pasted from SQL profiler during crystal report run, there is no error.

I discovered running in SSMS and crystal report generate 2 different query plans even I copied the SQL from SQL profiler, I have actually saved the query plans. Unfortunately, this forum does not accept attachments, or otherwise I will post my query plans here.

There is one thing I notice about the query plan is during nested loop operation, there is a warning "no join predicate". I don't use any views or UDF in the statement, nor did I use pre-1992 ANSI join syntax. However, I did use table variables.

My guess is whether this will cause " Could not continue scan with nolock due to data movement", after I clear the cache, I run crystal report again, and I look at the plan again, the "nested loop no join predicate" warning is gone.

Running this stored procedure took 1 second maximum, even when this error is popping up, it pop up within 1 second.

DBCC checkdb has been run

The same stored procedure running by crystal report in a SQL 2008 (non r2) live environment has no problems, so I am thinking this is R2 specific problems.

The "nested loop no join predicate" error SQL statment is below, no views, no udf, but table variables

INSERT @ChequeAccount
SELECT        PS.PaySummaryID, PS.EmployeeID, PS.CostCentreID,
            (PS.GrossPay    + PS.LumpSumA + PS.LumpSumB    + PS.LumpSumD+ PS.LumpSumE+ PS.ETP+ PS.PaymentsAfterTax    - PS.DeductionsAfterTax   - PS.Tax- PS.ETPTax    + PS.TaxRebate) * -1 AS Amount,
            CGLM.GLAccountID
FROM Pay_Summary PS JOIN Input_Sheet ISH ON PS.InputSheetID = ISH.InputSheetID  AND  ISH.PayrollID = @binPayrollID
AND PS.PaySummaryID NOT IN (SELECT PaySummaryID FROM @ChequeAccount)
JOIN Payroll P ON P.PayrollID = ISH.PayrollID AND P.EmployerID = @binEmployerID
JOIN CustomGLFixMapping CGLM ON CGLM.EmployerID = P.EmployerID AND CustomGLFixMappingNameID = 1 AND CGLM.CostCentreID IS NULL

Job getting failed when am using ntlg Test\SatishG

Hi all,

Am facing an issue :

The job failed.  Unable to determine if the owner (Test\SatishG) of job Backup_Subpaln1  has server access
(reason: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'Test\SatishG', error code 0x6e. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 15404)).

_________

Here, Test is my Server Name and SatishG is user.

When am creating a job with windows login  ( Test\SatishG  ) , Sql Server engine automatically makes that particular user as a job owner in sql server agent ( in my case windows login is Test\SatishG ).

When am trying to execute a job ( Backup_Subpaln1 )  it gives me a error as below

The job failed.  Unable to determine if the owner (Test\SatishG) of jobBackup_Subpaln1  has server access
(reason: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'Test\SatishG', error code 0x6e. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 15404)).

So, i have made Owner for a job Backup_Subpaln1  as SA , then it started Executing.

But my doubt is, Even ntlg Test\SatishG is a SysAdmin,But why it shows an error.

And when i started browsing , few blogs talk about Active Directory and am unable to understand it. ( According to my sense when we add  USER(SatishG) inDOMAIN(Test)  then only it allows user to connect through windows login , but why blogs say about Active Directory , Do we have to give any other permissions to user (SatishG) ).

Thanks in Advance..

Index Partition

hi, i have a large table with more than 26million records, doing a simple query such as "select * from scenario where marketdate = '2013-08-03'" would take more than a minute ... so ive partitioned the index only and use the marketdate as the partition column ... however, executing the simple select statement using the partitioned index doesnt make any difference against executing it using a normal index. Pls see the steps i did ...

1) copy the scenario table using select into statement

2) create a partitioned index for the cloned scenario table .. if ur thinking why i didnt partition the table so as to have an aligned partition, my department would not allow this for specific reason.

3) run a select statement against scenario table and cloned scenario table and compare the execution time

... although the execution plan is different, the execution time is not.

Can anyone help me pls?
